Survey Mission of Seminar:
Locate as many of the mounds that have not been found between the Mississippi River (mound 0)
and the Pearl River (mound 106). Teams of surveyors will be provided detailed information on
the projected location of the mounds in Latitude and Longitude. Both Friday March 2 and
Saturday March 3 will be spent in the field looking for mounds.
Equipment Needed:
Each crew needs to be equipped with all standard field equipment utilized by most survey crews,
plus at least two handheld GPS units reading to two decimal places of one second if available
(a good example is the Delorme PN 40 or PN 60). Survey grade GPS equipment to document the
location of any earthen mounds found. Concrete monuments will be provided, a post hole
digger will be necessary for each crew.

Other Important Information:
The mounds referred to in this seminar are the earthen mounds erected by the Colonial
Surveyor Andrew Ellicott and his men in the year of 1800 to mark the line between
Spain and the United States at 31 degrees of latitude.
This work is sponsored by Auburn University, the Mississippi Association of Professional
Surveyors and the Louisiana Society of Professional Surveyors. The funds generated from
this seminar will go toward continuing work on the historical preservation of the Line of Demarcation.
A signup brochure will be mailed/e-mailed in the fall of 2011. A Continuing Education
Credit Certificate will be issued by Auburn University. We encourage 6 to 8 surveyors
form a team, group housing will be available for a very reduced rate. Other registrants
will be assigned to a team upon registration.
