[edit] First Surveying Merit Badge LAB held by District 1

Metairie, La. Nov. 23, 2002 by Wayne Hebert, PLS-

District 1 held what it called it has nicknamed as a "Point of Beginning Lab" for the Boy Scouts of America's Surveying Merit Badge. The name was selected for this first class which was planned as a practice run through for future classes. Being the first such class held for this purpose the class was nicknamed the "Point of Beginning Lab".

The class was held at Lafreniere Park, Metairie, La., on Saturday, November 23. Mr. Walter Stone, PLS, Past LSPS District 1 President, was the organizer which was hosted by Gandolfo Kuhn & Avery John J & Associates Inc whom offered assistance to the class in instructors, equipment, and drafting tools for the class. Mr. Wayne Hebert, PLS, Past President LSPS and Southeast Louisiana Council Scouter, also served as an Instructor and Registered Merit Badge Counselor for the course.

The course started at 9 AM and was completed by 4:30 PM. Congratulations to Scouts from Troop 98 and Troop 296 who attended and completed their Surveying Merit Badge Requirements. The scouts from Troop 98 were : A. Taylor, N. Taylor, B. Ybos, J. Cole, & D. Krause. The Scouts from Troop 296 were: T. Pusateri; C. Moises; & R. Speyrer

The speedy successful completion of the class was a consequence of the time and effort Mr. Stone placed in hosting organizational meetings to understand and prepare the class in advance of the day of the Lab. Some of the materials used in preparing for the class was the Power Point presentation of Mr. Thomas Brooks Jr., PLS, Past President of the National Society of Professional Surveyors and member of LSPS. Mr. Hebert requested the Power Point Presentation from Mr. Brooks after attending a CPD course titled, "How to teach the Surveying Merit Badge" held at the Annual Spring Meeting of ACSM held jointly with FIG in Washington D.C. in the spring of 2002. Mr. Hebert requested and received permission from District One President, Mr. Randall Dixon, PLS, to present the course District 1's September Meeting, Mr. Stone immediately contacted Mr. Hebert to plan and organize a district event. Mr. Wayne Hebert offers his time to present the "How to teach the Surveying Merit Badge" Power Point presentation along with lessons learned for hosting such an event to any district interested in hosting a similar event.

Mr. Walter Stone and District One extends a challenge to other districts to host a similar event. Mr. Stone can attest to the fact that this is a win-win situation for your company, the profession, and the scouts whose future it may influence.
