[edit] NICHOLLS STATE UNIVERSITY GEOMATICS PROGRAM

The NSU bachelor's degree program in geomatics is designed to offer college-level preparation that meets the educational requirements for registration as a Professional Land Surveyor in Louisiana. Geomatics integrates the traditional surveying definition with a variety of other spatial-related information. Geomatics is fundamental to all geoscience disciplines that use spatially-related data. Those disciplines include geodesy, cartography, remote sensing, photogrammetry, geographic information systems, land information systems and global positioning systems. Scholarships are available to dedicated full-time geomatics students, and each geomatic major is assigned an adviser in the Dept. of Applied Sciences. [edit] The Surveyor

Did you know George Washington was one of the first Land Surveyors of this country? Yes, the first President of the United States. The list continues; Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln were also Land Surveyors. These men were some of the first path finders to map the United States.

The technology in the surveying profession has changed dramatically since the years of George Washington. Education of the surveyor is more important now than any other time in history.

Professional Surveyors now perform charting and mapping for a wide range of projects, such as marine and aircraft accident investigations. With the use of global positioning satellites these surveys can be completed in a timely manner and with a high degree of accuracy.

Realizing this, the Louisiana Society of Professional Surveyors has established an Education Foundation as a means of supporting the education process.

The Louisiana Society of Professional Surveyors, through its Education Foundation, offers a $1,000 scholarship each year. Our society has vowed to make this contribution to a High School Senior entering the Geomatics Program at Nicholls State University. With contributions being made to the Foundation, we have been able to award a scholarship each year. Application deadline for 2008 is March 1. Click the Scholarship Form for application.

[edit] Becoming a Professional Land Surveyor

Education Requirements:
Complete a 4 year baccalaureate degree program with a minimum of 30 semester credit hours, or the equivalent, of surveying, mapping and real property courses which are approved by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board.

Land Surveyor Intern Exam:
Upon completion of the education requirements the applicant may take the Fundamentals of Surveying Examination to become a Land Surveyor Intern.

Work Experience:
Prior to becoming a Professional Land Surveyor the applicant must obtain at least four years of combined office and field experience in land surveying, including two years or more experience in responsible charge of land surveying projects under the supervision of a Professional Land Surveyor.

Final Exams:
Upon successful completion of the above listed education requirements, Fundamentals of Land Surveying Examination, and work experience, the applicant may apply to the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board for permission to take the Principles & Practice and the Louisiana Laws and Procedures Examinations; which are the final steps in becoming a Registered Professional Land Surveyor.

Louisiana Society of Professional Surveyors Education Foundation

Established on October 24, 1989, as a non­profit corporation. This Corporation was formed exclusively for educational and scientific purposes:

• The granting of scholarships, providing guidance and by other similar means assisting worthy students to obtain instruction and training in land surveying and higher education generally.

• The instruction of the public and the dissemination of land surveying information to the public.

• The making of contributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954.

• The conduct and support of programs for education in land surveying subjects.
